Understanding the condition

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a common gynaecological condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus. It primarily affects women of reproductive age.

Common sites include the ovaries, fallopian tubes, outer surface of the uterus, pelvic cavity lining, vagina, cervix, bladder and rectum.

Causes

Why does it occur?

The exact cause of endometriosis is not fully understood. Research suggests several contributing factors.
01

Genetic

A family history of endometriosis may increase your risk.

02

Immune system

A defect in the immune system may prevent the body from recognising abnormal tissue.

03

Hormonal

Hormonal imbalances may trigger or accelerate tissue growth.

04

Surgical

In some cases it may develop as a complication of prior surgery.

Diagnosis

How is it diagnosed?

Dr. Marcia Bonazzi will discuss your general health and symptoms, then perform a pelvic examination to assess for cysts or scarring.

An ultrasound scan may be arranged to look for ovarian cysts. In some cases, a laparoscopy (minimally invasive investigative surgery) is performed to visualise the pelvic cavity, assess tissue growth, and confirm the diagnosis.

"Endometriosis is often dismissed or misdiagnosed for years. I take a thorough, evidence-based approach to ensure you receive a correct and timely diagnosis."

Treatment

Your treatment options

There are several pathways available to manage pain, control bleeding, and address fertility. Dr. Marcia Bonazzi will guide you to the right option for your situation.
01

Pain Medication

Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with mild discomfort. For more severe pain, Dr. Marcia Bonazzi may prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication.

02

Hormone Treatment

For small growths with mild pain, hormonal therapy is the first line of treatment. Options include pills, injections, and nasal sprays. Birth control pills can also reduce menstrual bleeding.

03

Laparoscopy

A minimally invasive surgery where growths and scar tissue are removed or cauterised without harming surrounding healthy tissue.

04

Laparotomy

A major abdominal procedure for more extensive cases, allowing direct access to remove endometrial growths.

05

Hysterectomy

Removal of the uterus. This is only considered in severe cases where the patient does not wish to become pregnant in the future.
